Most people who want financial freedom focus on strategies but don't know how to do money shadow work.
They create budgets, learn about investing, start side hustles, study Bitcoin or dive into manifestation practices. And while these tools can be incredibly powerful, there’s often a hidden force that’s operating beneath the surface, quietly sabotaging even the best financial plans. This force is called your money shadow.
If you’ve ever wondered why you keep repeating the same money mistakes, feel uncomfortable earning more or find yourself judging wealthy people but secretly wanting financial freedom, then money shadow work may be the key you’ve been missing.
Immerse yourself in powerful shamanic drumming that’s designed to support deep focus, concentration and inner exploration.
What is Money Shadow Work?
Money shadow work is the process of uncovering and integrating the unconscious beliefs, fears, desires and emotional patterns that influence your relationship with money. This concept comes from the work of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. He described the Shadow as the part of the psyche that contains everything we repress, deny or reject about ourselves.
These unconscious patterns don’t disappear simply because we ignore them. Instead, they influence our decisions behind the scenes– which is why money shadow work is often more transformative compared to learning another investment strategy or productivity hack.
Why Money Shadow Work Matters
Many people unknowingly create internal conflict around money:
- They may want abundance but believ wealthy people are greedy.
- Wanting financial freedom but feeling guilty earning more.
- They want to build wealth but fear being judged by friends or family.
These contradictions create what psychologists call cognitive dissonance. One one hand, you consciously desire prosperity but on the other hand, your unconscious mind associates wealth with danger, rejection or moral compromise.
The result is self-sabotage. You procrastinate on opportunities, undercharge for your services, avoid investing, spend impulsively after earning more, or unconsciously push success away whenever it arrives.
Money shadow work helps bring these hidden conflicts into awareness so they can be transformed.
The 5 Stages of Money Shadow Work
While everyone’s journey is different, effective money shadow work typically moves through five stages.
1. Recognition
The first step is becoming aware of your emotional triggers around money. Notice moments when you feel jealous of someone’s success, guilty about earning money, fearful of taking financial risks or ashamed of wanting more.
These reactions often point directly towards shadow material.
2. Acceptance
Once you’ve identified a shadow aspect, resist the urge to judge it.
The goal isn’t to eliminate these feelings, but to acknowledge them with honesty and compassion.
4. Integration
Integration means finding healthy ways to express the energy trapped within the shadow. For example, suppressed ambition doesn’t need to become greed and can instead become purpose-driven achievement.
A desire for wealth doesn’t have to conflict with spirituality but can become a vehicle for service, generosity and freedom.
Powerful Techniques You Can Do
Observe Your Money Triggers
Strong emotional reactions are often goldmines for shadow work. The next time someone talks about earning six figures, investing successfully or living a luxurious lifestyle, pay attention to your response.
Ask yourself:
- What exactly am I judging?
- Why does this bother me?
- Could this quality exist within me?
- Is there a positive version of this trait that I have suprressed?
What we criticise in others often reveals something we’ve disowned within ourselves.
Practice Active Imagination
One of Carl Jung’s most powerful techniques is active imagination.
Sit quietly and visualise a money-related shadow figure. It might appear as an inner critic telling you that you’ll never succeed; a greedy businessperson you dislike; or a fearful version of yourself who avoids financial responsibility. Allow the figure to speak freely and listen without interruption, then respond from your conscious self.
Writing down the dialogue can reveal surprising insights and help integrate conflicting parts of your pscyhe.
Analyse Your Dreams
Dreams frequently reveal shadow material before your conscious mind recognizes it. Keep a notebook beside your bed and record any dreams involving money, wealth, poverty, success, theft or dark and mysterious figures.
Rather than taking dreams literally, look for symbolic themes that may reflect hidden beliefs about abundance.
Journal Without Censorship
Unfiltered writing is one of the simplest forms of money shadow work. Try exploring questions such as:
- What am I most ashamed of wanting financially?
- What did I learn about money growing up?
- Which wealthy people trigger me the most?
- What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail financially?
- Do I have money beliefs did I inherent from my family?
The goal isn’t to write something inspiring but to be radically honest.
Use Creative Expression
Not everyone processes emotions through words. Drawing, painting, movement, music or creating mandalas can help bring unconscious money patterns into conscious awareness.
Giving form to your money shadow often reduces its power over you.
Try The Empty Chair Exercise
Place two or three chairs in a room. One of these chairs represents your spiritual self, the other your money shadow, and the last (if you have three) represents your integrated, wise self. Move between the chairs and speak from each perspective.
This simple exercise often reveals hidden conflicts that logical thinking alone cannot access.
Beginner Exercises for Money Shadow Work
Emotional Charge Inventory
Write down the last five situations where money triggered a strong emotional reaction. For each one, you can ask:
- What happened?
- Did any emotions arise? What kind?
- If any, what belief might be underneath it?
Patterns are usually quick to emerge once you start paying attention.
Strength-to-Shadow Mapping
List your greatest strengths. For example, discipline, generosity, ambition or generosity… then explore their shadow expressions.
Discipling can become rigidity, generosity can be people-pleasing, ambition can become greed.
This exercise helps reveal the hidden polarity within every trait.
Golden Shadow Work
Most people focus on negative shadows, but Jung also described the golden shadow– the positive qualities we admire in others but haven’t fully claimed ourselves.
Think about someone who inspires you financially. What qualities do they embody? Where do these qualities already exist within you? How can you develop them further?
This form of money shadow work can unlock confidence, leadership and abundance.
The Benefits of Doing Shadow Work
Consistent money shadow work often leads to less self-sabotage, increased confidence, better financial decisions, stronger boundaries, healthier relationships with wealth, greater emotional resilience and more authentic success, to name a few.
An unconscious resistance decreases, opportunities become easier to recognise and act upon. Many people notice improvements not only in their finances but also in their overall sense of freedom and self-worth.
Important Cautions
Money shadow work is powerful, but it isn’t about giving every impulse free rein. The goal is integration, not indulgence. It’s also important to remember that shadow work can uncover old wounds, family conditioning or unresolved trauma.
If difficult emotions become overwhelming, working with a qualified therapist, particularly one familiar with Jungian psychology, can be incredibly powerful. Most importantly, understand that money shadow work is not a one-time exercise. This is an ongoing relationship with the unconscious mind.
It should be noted that abundance is more than accumulating money. It’s removing the internal conflicts that prevent you from receiving, creating and managing wealth in a healthy way. When you stop fighting your money shadow and start listening to it, you reclaim parts of yourself that have been locked away for years.
Following this, you become less reactive, less fearful and less driven by unconscious programming.
And from this place of wholeness, abundance can flow far more naturally.
